Directed and shot by Jamie DeWolf. Watch Marje Kilpatrick in “Chocolate Smile,” a new film produced for the Bigger Picture project, a collaboration between Youth Speaks and UCSF’s Center for Vulnerable Populations. Born and raised in Richmond, Calif., Marje addresses many of the socioeconomic and environmental factors within her community that help contribute to the Type 2 diabetes epidemic.
In low income communities, Type 2 diabetes is spiking in younger and younger people. The food and beverage industry is especially targeting youth of color for their high sugar products.
75% of teenagers of color drink at least one sugary drink a day, increasing their risk of Type 2 diabetes by about 25%. Nearly 1 in 2 children born after the year 2000 will get diabetes in their lifetime…unless we do something about it.
